Upon the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Gulf Research Center Foundation has been awarded the special consultative status of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. The status allows the GRCF to attend all UN conferences; request the Secretary-General to place items of special interest in the provisional agenda of the Council; designate representatives to the UN Headquarters in New York and the UN offices in Geneva and Vienna; submit written statements and oral presentations to the work of the council; be part of research and consultancy consortiums as well as apply for funding. This accreditation significantly widens the scope of GRCF activities and further accredits the work carried out by the Foundation.

Dr. Sager presented Honorary Fellowship Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center, received an honorary fellowship from the Universita Ca’Foscari Venezia on May 23, 2011 during a ceremony at the university in Venice, Italy. The fellowship was bestowed to Dr. Sager by the Rector of the Ca’Foscari University, Prof. Carlo Carraro. In his laudatio, Prof. Matteo Legrenzi, Associate Professor for International Relations and Gulf Studies noted Dr. Sager’s philanthropic work for the promotion of Gulf studies and his overall contribution to the scholarly development of the discipline. As part of the ceremony, the Gulf Research Center and the Ca’Foscari University Foundation signed an agreement on long-term cooperation. Dr. Sager thanked the university for the honor and as part of the ceremony gave a lecture entitled: “The Arab Spring: What Role for Europe?”
