On September 10, Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center spoke at the Arab Gulf State Institute in Washington’s (AGSIW) virtual panel, discussing the potential for Red Sea basin countries to turn developing foreign engagement into opportunities for greater political and economic cooperation

The virtual panel titled ‘Competition or Cooperation: The Horn of African and Broader Red Sea Basin at a Crossroads’, was moderated by Ambassador Frank G. Wisner, along with the speakers, Ambassador Alexander Rondos, Abdul Mohammed, Abdulaziz Sager, and Kate Almquist Knopf. The virtual panel discussion focused attention on heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa and wider Red Sea basin, strategic area that has become a hub for regional and global power competition and investment.

The final outcome of the panel discussion focused on four key conclusions:

-Each Red Sea basin country, given its own circumstances, is required to define its way forward in order to achieve the right kind of stable outcome. The support of external players is important, without interfering in political transitions

-Second, the need to intensify Red Sea cooperation, especially with the Gulf states as this region is mostly affected by the situation in the Horn

-Third, importance of conflict management among rivalries in the region; competition involving Turkey, Qatar, and with great powers such as the U.S. and China

-Finally, reinforcing the fact that the Horn of Africa region and wider Red Sea basin are in need of help; whether through debt relief, development assistance, and private investments. These are opportunities leading towards a path of greater understanding of the of the many issues that the region faces

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center spoke at the Council of Council’s second virtual conference this year discussing seventy-five years of the United Nations and how the current COVID-19 pandemic relates to strengthening international cooperation, especially regarding vaccine production and distribution.

The conference included two sessions, with the first one focused on the last seventy-five years since the United Nations was established, and on how COVID-19 has tested international organizations and multilateralism.

The second session discussed updates on COVID-19 and the role of strengthening international cooperation on vaccine production and distribution.

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center participated as a speaker at a webinar entitled ‘Change and Continuity in Middle East Geopolitics’ organized by Cambridge Middle East and North Africa Forum

Cambridge Middle East and North Africa Forum organised a webinar entitled ‘Change and Continuity in Middle East Geopolitics’ on Monday 29th, June 2020 which covered the topic of geopolitical changes in the region in the context of COVID-19

The discussions focused on a various topics, ‘Would Iran try to use nuclear energy in Tump’s second term?’, ‘Will Biden’s election give hope in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations?’, ‘What does the decline in relations between the United States and China mean for the Middle East?’, ‘What role does the UK play in the region’. Dr. Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center participated as a speaker as part of the panel, which included a politicians, experts and researchers from the Middle East region, Europe and the United States. During his talk, Dr. Abdulaziz discussed and analysed these topics and answered a number of questions from the participants

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center and Lead Co-Chair of T20 Task Force 5 ‘The Future of Multilateralism and Global Governance’, headed the webinar task force meeting that was organized on Tuesday 16 June 2020

This webinar discussed the task force’s recommendations and policy briefs to be submitted to the G20 working groups. This session was part of a three-day conference organised by the T20 entitled ‘Policy Recommendations for a Post-COVID-19 World’

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center, participated in an online workshop entitled ‘Political Geography, Nuclear Issues and the Middle East’ organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)

A number of experts and researchers from the Middle East and the United State of America participated in the workshop. In this session Dr. Abdulaziz spoke about the ‘Gulf Cooperation Council visions on Iran’ in which he examined the views of the Gulf countries on the future relations with Iran, and the settlements that can be presented by both sides. Dr. Abdulaziz also discussed the current Iranian threats to the Gulf region and the U.S. position regarding the region, and its preparations in case the situation worsened and war broke out in the Gulf region

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center, participated in the symposium organized by the Center of the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth (CIPPEC), fostering talks on institutional, social and political transformation

This session entitled ‘Global Governance and lessons learned from the Corona pandemic’ was attended by Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, focusing on the cooperation between governments to face this crisis, and the new forms of non-governmental cooperation witnessed in the world. The session also tried to answer whether this would mark the beginning of a new form of pluralism. The impact of the pandemic on US-China relations was also discussed, and its impact on the Chinese role in the new world order

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager, Chairman of the Gulf Research Center, participated in the ‘Council of Councils’ tele-conference, which was organised by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)

The conference focused on the Corona pandemic and the emerging global governance challenges. Dr. Abdulaziz discussed the effects of the Corona pandemic on the future of the global system and international cooperation. It is worth noting that this conference is held annually for a selected group of 28 Think Tanks from a number of countries from different continents of the world, in which heads of these Think Tanks participate to discuss global challenges, direct high-level international attention and effective political responses to these challenges. The Gulf Research Center is the only member participating in this council from the Arab countries
